SONG REVIEW: REMINISCING (1978) BY LITTLE RIVER BAND

Written by Graeham Goble

Taken from the album “Sleeper Catcher (1978)

The late, great John Lennon once said that “Reminiscing” by Little River Band was one of his favorite songs despite all the great music he wrote. I share John’s opinion but even if I had not yet heard of John’s opinion, “Reminiscing” has always been one of my favorite songs of all time. In fact, it is in my top 3. The song has that magical, nostalgic vibe to it, Such a wonderful melody, lyrics (we’ll go dancing in the dark, walking through the park and reminiscing…”), arrangement and vocals and harmonies. It has universal meaning about a couple looking back and recalling the good old days and how it was.

Little River Band is a rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia in March 1975. They achieved chart success in Australia and the United Sates with songs like “Lonesome Loser,” “Cool Change,” and “Lady.” “Reminiscing” was their biggest hit in the United States peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Members during the 1976-78 years were Graeham Goble, Beeb Birtles, George McArdle, David Briggs, Derek Pellicci and Glenn Shorrock who sang lead in “Reminiscing” and who thought of the group’s new name (previously Mississippi) after passing Little River while travelling from Melbourne.
